One year of growth: Journey of Dept of PMR at Dr.Somervell Memorial Medical College
One year ago, the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was officially established at Dr.SMCSI Medical College, marking a significant milestone in the Institutions journey towards comprehensive healthcare.From its inception, the department not only worked in synergy with the established Physiotherapy dept, but also extended its services by initiating occupational therapy and speech therapy units, further enhancing the department’s capacity to address the complex requirements of patients. Currently the department offers out-patient as well as in-patient services throughout the week.A major milestone was reopening the Artificial Limb Centre for manufacturing assistive devices, which has also opened avenues for prosthetic manufacturing in near future.
Few of departments proudest collaboration has been with Dept. of Paediatrics through the Child Development Clinic for comprehensive Paediatric rehabilitation and with Dept. of Psychiatry for functional training of people with Psychiatric disorders. Other notable milestone is the inauguration of Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic and routine USG guided Interventional pain management.The success of the department is anchored by the leadership of Dr. P S Suresh Kumar (Professor and HOD) and supported by Dr.Heera Selsa (Assistant Professor), who haveCultivated a team oriented environment that values interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.
Today the Dept of PMR at Dr.SMCSI Medical College, functions as a multidisciplinary service provider, dedicated to expanding its capabilities to serve as a centre of excellence.
